The SCD History

The journey begins with a son losing his mother to leukemia and coming to believing that the environment we live in and the quality of our food has a direct relation to health and sustainability. This son, Matthew Wood began to devote his life to finding healthier lifestyles for sustainable living. This search ultimately led him to EARTH College in Costa Rica where he learned about the existence of beneficial and effective microorganisms (EM) technology from Dr. Panfilo Tabora and participated in numerous successful trials. The phrase of "beneficial and effective microorganisms", with the acronym of "EM" was described by Dr. Teruo Higa in his research reports and lectures in the 1980s. Since then, this phrase has been used by numerous academics, government agencies and users to describe the generic concept of EM technology and theory in its many forms.

EARTH College and the government became more interested in EM based on tremendous results in trials and invited Dr. Higa to Costa Rica. In August 1997, Matthew had the opportunity to meet and tour with Dr. Higa for a week throughout Costa Rica. At this time, he told Dr. Higa that he would like to start a company in the United States to develop and promote EM technology. Dr. Higa told him to "go for it", and invited Matthew to Okinawa to study a Master's of Science in Dr. Higa's original EM laboratory at the University of Ryukyus.

Matthew founded SCD in 1998, and began to develop and distribute EM related products and other manufacturer's products that supported healthy lifestyles. SCD began building the market in North America for the EM products manufactured in Japan, such as EM-X and the EM Ceramics. EMRO and EM Corporation (EMCO) of Japan agreed that SCD was the exclusive North American importer and distributor of EM products from Japan. When Matthew completed his Master's of Science in Dr. Higa's laboratory, he returned to Kansas City to be the President of SCD and focus on building the North America market for EMRO's products from Japan.

However, in 2001, after SCD had built up large volume sales for some EMRO products, EMRO changed the deal with SCD and gave EMRO USA the exclusive rights to distribute in the U.S. Accordingly, SCD began to manufacture its own SCD EM™ products. SCD's technology is based on Matthew's training in Dr. Higa's class lectures at the University of Ryukyus and innovative developments made by SCD's research team. SCD established a manufacturing facility in Kansas City, MO in 2001 and began to build its technical team, which now includes microbiologists and fermentation specialists, and is led by Dr. Narin Tipsrisukond. This team continues to improve the SCD EM™ formulations, creating formulations that are different and unique from competitors, but that still provide the benefits inherent with EM technology. SCD uses more diverse species of effective microorganisms in several of its formulations than any other EM provider. Thus, students of Dr Higa have created two companies – EMRO and SCD – both with the intent to manufacture and produce EM to spread the use of this fantastic technology.

SCD's manufacturing facility is the only EM facility in the world that has been certified as food grade by independent authorities. This makes specific SCD EM™ formulations fit for human and animal consumption. Also, several of SCD EM Mother Cultures™ have been listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic farming and livestock. These independent third party certifications require the highest levels of manufacturing processes and quality control processes to gain approval.

SCD produces its own microbial seeds and mother cultures in this high quality facility. By controlling its own manufacturing and maintaining rigorous process and quality control standards, SCD can guarantee consistent, high quality SCD EM™ products. SCD has in the last three years shifted its focus from being a distributor of other's products to selling and manufacturing its own products. SCD believes its core strength is its understanding of and the production of SCD EM™ products and is working to expand its distribution network around the world to expand the use of beneficial and effective microorganisms technology.

By making SCD an independent EM technology company, Matthew can ensure that his son and many in future generations can have access to the amazing benefits of EM technology. The journey that began with a son seeking solutions to his mothers' illness has now led to a thriving biotech manufacturing company that produces all natural and organic products to improve human and animal health, support the growth of organic farming and fix environmental issues such as waste treatment and odor control.
